A good translator is invisible
...The good translator is therefore a mind-reader, a psychologist, a chameleon, a detective, and, as the case may be, an expert in the most diverse fields, all rolled into one. The reader doesn't even notice the good translator's work; they only flick back if they want to see whose work this terrible translation is. The good translator is therefore invisible, only the bad translator is visible.
Vera Gyárfás, literary translator

My name is Krisztina Kótai, and I am an English-Hungarian specialist translator and proofreader.
I undertake English-Hungarian and Hungarian-English specialised translation, proofreading, and post-editing of machine translations, primarily in the fields of economics, law, and marketing/market research.
I spent seven years working for multinational companies in marketing and market research roles at Unilever and Coca-Cola. I have been working as a translator since 2002; I set up my own business in 2006 and have been working full-time as a translator ever since. Since 2017, I have been involved in translating Eurobarometer opinion polls commissioned by the European Union. Around 90% of my clients are foreign translation agencies, but I also take on work from Hungarian agencies and private individuals.
Qualifications, tools, and professional background
I obtained a Master's degree in Economics and a second degree in English-language Economic Translation from the Janus Pannonius University of Pécs in 1995, followed by a second degree in Legal Economist in 1996. I use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools for my work — SDL Trados Studio 2024, MemoQ 2015, Phrase, XTM, Smartcat, Smartling, Crowdin, XTRF — ensuring consistent terminology even in lengthy documents. I am a member of the Association of Hungarian Translators and Interpreters, have been listed in the fordit.hu professional directory since 2006, and am a member of the ProZ Certified PRO Network.
